Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

The three of them entered the house together.

Yu Jin remained by the side to attend to them.

Xiao Heng sat in the middle, with Princess Xinyang and Shangguan Qing facing each other across from him.

Princess Xinyang looked at this child, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't stop the hot tears from falling.

Shangguan Qing hadn’t felt particularly emotional at first, but the moment he saw her crying, his heart suddenly ached with a sharp, unexpected tenderness.

With emotions running too high between the two, it fell to Xiao Heng to recount everything that had happened.

He began with the truth about Shangguan Yan’s identity.

The female slave from the State of Yan all those years ago was in fact the Crown Princess of the State of Yan. After being framed by others, she was sold into the underground fighting arenas, where she was later rescued by Marquis Xuanping.

Everything after that, Princess Xinyang already knew.

But what she didn’t know was that the Crown Princess of Great Yan hadn’t killed Shangguan Qing and had only hidden him away. And when she escaped, she secretly took Shangguan Qing with her.

At that time, Shangguan Qing had been poisoned.

The medical knowledge of the State of Chen was highly advanced.

She first traveled to the State of Chen to seek a cure. The physicians there managed to extend Shangguan Qing’s life slightly, but the effect was minimal. In order to keep him alive, she had no choice but to take him back into the tiger’s den that was Shengdu.

What followed was a series of turbulent upheavals within the Xuanyuan Family.

Shangguan Yan was stripped of her status as Crown Princess, but the Emperor was exceedingly fond of Shangguan Qing. He allowed him to retain his title as the Eldest Imperial Grandson and ordered the Imperial Advisor’s Hall to continue providing him with treatment.

However, as Shangguan Qing grew older, his features gradually matured, and he started to look less and less like Shangguan Yan.

More and more people began attacking Shangguan Yan, using Shangguan Qing’s identity to stir controversy, even submitting memorandums to the court accusing her of polluting the imperial bloodline.

With no other choice, Shangguan Yan secretly sent someone to the State of Zhao to covertly sketch a portrait of Xiao Heng and had Shangguan Qing alter his appearance to resemble Xiao Heng.

And it was precisely this decision that exposed Xiao Heng’s existence to the Crown Prince’s faction.

To save the child of Xinyang, Shangguan Yan had to expose her own.

What she did back then, stealing the antidote meant for Shangguan Qing, was cruel and unforgivable.

But the way she spent the rest of her life trying to atone was also undeniably sincere.

Over the years, she had treated Shangguan Qing as her own. Not merely out of guilt, but because the bond between them, the love between mother and son, was real.

Of course, when Xiao Heng recounted all of this, he didn’t insert his own opinions. He simply presented the facts as they were, with complete objectivity.

No one could forgive Shangguan Yan on Princess Xinyang’s behalf, nor could anyone bear the pain she had carried all these years from the loss of her child.

Whether she chose to hate, to forgive, or to feel something else entirely, Princess Xinyang had to come to her own conclusion.

Shangguan Qing looked at Princess Xinyang anxiously, as though awaiting a verdict.

Yet upon hearing all this, Princess Xinyang's emotions gradually settled.

She looked at Shangguan Qing and said bitterly, “Actually, even if she hadn’t ‘taken’ the antidote back then, you still wouldn’t have survived. The late Emperor feared your father. I was only married off to him as a political pawn, and my Dragon Shadow Guards had orders to kill him at any time. And to ensure I wouldn’t hesitate because of maternal affection, the Dragon Shadow Guards... they were instructed to kill my child with him. If they failed once, they would return a second time, and again, until... I lost you completely.”

“I’ve hurt Ah Heng deeply too. The two of you, you were both innocent. If I must blame someone, first I blame my imperial father, then the fact that I was born into the imperial family, and lastly, I blame myself, as your mother... for failing to protect you both.”

Not “you,” but “you both.”

Toward both her sons, she felt an overwhelming and equal sense of guilt.

After being misled by the false truth that Shangguan Yan had “murdered her child,” hadn’t she also vented her fury on the innocent Xiao Heng?

What right did she have to blame Shangguan Yan?

Xiao Heng gently took her hand in his.

The death of the Little Marquis in the great fire on New Year’s Eve, those events had passed.

The knot in his heart had finally been untangled.

He was not a child abandoned by his mother.

In the end, at the most critical moment, his mother had given her life to protect him.

Princess Xinyang choked back a sob and smiled through her tears. “I’m truly grateful to her for raising you. If not for her, I might have lost you a long time ago.”

Shangguan Qing looked visibly relieved, the tension in his entire body eased. He smiled and said, “Mother also said she was grateful that you raised my younger brother. Because if the true imperial eldest grandson had returned to the State of Yan, it would’ve been nearly impossible for him to grow up safely.”

Fate was a strange and powerful thing, but as long as one does good, one need not fear what lies ahead.

“Mother?” Princess Xinyang was slightly taken aback.

Shangguan Qing awkwardly rubbed his nose and said, “That, uh... that’s what I call my mother.”

Princess Xinyang silently considered this form of address and could clearly sense how natural and close the bond between Shangguan Yan and Qing’er had been.

Xiao Heng said, “In that case, let’s leave the past where it belongs and never bring it up again.”

Princess Xinyang gave a small nod in agreement.

Shangguan Qing also had no objections.

Princess Xinyang looked at her son, lost and found again, and still couldn’t quite believe it was real. “Ah Heng, pinch me.”

Xiao Heng chuckled and said, “Better you pinch me instead.”

How could I bear to let you feel pain?

And then, Princess Xinyang actually pinched him.

Xiao Heng winced with an exaggerated expression, as though it belonged in a comic strip.

Mother, you’ve changed. You didn’t used to have such a heavy hand.

It’s official, I’ve fallen out of favor...

Princess Xinyang sheepishly rubbed the spot on her son’s thigh that had turned red from the pinch.

The return of Qing’er was such a miracle that she was overwhelmed by joy and truly didn’t know what to do with herself.

Shangguan Qing stared in wide-eyed amazement, suddenly thinking that Princess Xinyang didn’t seem so distant or unapproachable after all (it was all his annoying little brother’s fault, always saying his mother was cold and aloof like some fairy untouched by the mundane world).

He had been so worried about being disliked.

Turns out he’d been overthinking it.

This mother was actually quite down-to-earth.

“But Mother, what exactly is going on here?” Xiao Heng asked, eyeing her belly, which looked like it was about to bump into the table. “Is it my father’s?”

At the mention of this, Princess Xinyang immediately grew indignant.

She had clearly drunk the contraception decoction!

So how had she still ended up pregnant?!

What was even more outrageous was that it took her three whole months to realize!

Had she known, she would’ve drunk a few extra bowls of that blasted decoction!

Perhaps sensing his mother’s disapproval, the little one in her belly gave an aggrieved little turn and threw in a few kicks for good measure, stamping out faint impressions of tiny feet on her abdomen.

Princess Xinyang gasped and clutched her belly.

This child is so rowdy.

Qing’er had been so much quieter in the womb.

Xiao Heng gave a solemn nod. “Looks like it is my father’s.”

Besides him, I really can’t imagine any other man who could make you grind your teeth in fury like this.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

—

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

—

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
