Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Xiao Heng looked toward the overbearing and aggressive Shangguan Qing with a faint smile, saying, “Your Highness the Ghost King, would you step outside for a moment?”
“You think just because you said so, I’ll go? You’ve got no sense of seniority!” Shangguan Qing put on all the airs of an older brother. “Follow me!”
Xiao Heng suppressed the upward curve of his lips and obediently followed Shangguan Qing out of the tent.
They arrived at an open training ground nearby. Shangguan Qing had his firelance hoisted over his shoulder. Though he appeared mighty, he didn’t quite exude a commanding aura. He stopped walking, turned around with a fierce glare directed at Xiao Heng, clearly preparing to demonstrate his elder brotherly authority.
But just then, Xiao Heng spoke gently, “Elder brother.”
That single phrase stopped all of Shangguan Qing’s impending posturing dead in its tracks, as though his entire grand speech got lodged in his throat!
Shangguan Qing’s eyes widened in disbelief, a little flustered and a bit embarrassed. Whatever he was feeling, it was clearly very complicated!
“W-What did you just call me?” He demanded seriously, eyes glaring wide.
Xiao Heng spoke with an innocent expression, “Elder brother, aren’t you my elder brother?”
Ah, what was with that look on this kid’s face?
He looked just like a helpless little deer; how was anyone supposed to bully him like this?
And calling him ‘elder brother’ so easily and so sweetly? He hadn’t even had a proper moment to intimidate him yet!
Shangguan Qing gave a light cough, trying hard to maintain his domineering persona. “O-Of course I’m your elder brother! But… how did you recognize me?”
Xiao Heng smiled faintly, revealing a completely guileless and obedient demeanor. “Maybe… it’s just that kind of telepathic connection between brothers.”
Truth be told, it was because his features so strongly resembled their parents’. Who would believe they weren’t blood-related?
And that audacious, headstrong aura of his was practically a carbon copy of their father.
But no matter what he was thinking on the inside, Xiao Heng’s expression on the surface remained meek and endearingly well-behaved.
On the way over, Shangguan Qing had imagined countless scenarios for meeting his younger brother.
After all, his brother was a scholar, and there were plenty of scholars at court. Those types prided themselves on being aloof and refined, reeking of musty pedantry, and looked down their noses at anyone who wasn’t well-versed in the classics.
To them, even military men were nothing more than brute simpletons.
And someone like him, who was neither accomplished in letters nor particularly skilled in arms, was even further beneath their notice.
He had endured no shortage of mockery behind his back.
It was only because of his short lifespan that no one made a fuss at court. Otherwise, the memorandums petitioning to strip the Eldest Imperial Grandson of his title could have circled the entire State of Yan!
That was exactly why he had made such a grand show today; he wanted to seize the momentum and overwhelm the other party with sheer presence!
But why… why was this kid so well-behaved?
It made him impossible to bully——
“Elder brother, what’s that you’re holding?” Xiao Heng asked curiously.
The moment his weapon was mentioned, Shangguan Qing’s confidence surged, and his aura shot up to a towering presence of two point eight meters!
He raised the firelance in his hand and bragged to Xiao Heng, “You definitely haven’t seen this thing in the State of Zhao, right? It’s called a firelance; immensely powerful! Stronger than any weapon out there! No expert could withstand a single shot!”
Of course, its range was terribly limited, and its accuracy left much to be desired.
But that part was conveniently left unsaid; otherwise, how was he supposed to show off?
Xiao Heng put on an expression of complete confusion.
Shangguan Qing looked around. Seeing that there was no one else nearby who could be accidentally hurt, he said to Xiao Heng, “Come, I’ll show you how it works.”
“Alright.” Xiao Heng followed along without the slightest resistance.
Shangguan Qing called over a few ghost soldiers and had them stack several large stones in an open area. Then, he placed a stepping stone by his foot.
He stepped back twenty paces.
…Any farther, and he wouldn’t be able to aim properly.
“Watch closely.” Shangguan Qing planted one foot on the stepping stone, raised the firelance with an air of dominance, and pulled the trigger, aiming at the pile of stones.
A deafening bang rang out, and the stone was blasted into the air.
The air instantly filled with the pungent smell of black gunpowder.
Xiao Heng more or less understood what it was by now.
It was, in truth, a rather impressive invention. For one, the sound and force were enough to strike fear into the enemy’s heart. And secondly, the wounds inflicted by black gunpowder were large, ragged, and shocking in appearance, which could cause immense psychological stress among the wounded, making battlefield breakdowns far more likely.
However, the weapon still looked bulky and clumsy. Its precision was poor, and while it packed a punch at close range, it needed serious improvement if it was to be used for long-range combat.
Shangguan Qing turned back and gave a cocky grin at his younger brother. “Well? Pretty amazing, right?”
Xiao Heng instantly switched expressions, looking as though he had been startled by the loud gunfire.
Shangguan Qing burst into loud laughter!
So much for a top scholar little brother!
What a scaredy-cat!
“You bookish types really are a bunch of cowards!”
Feeling like he had finally reclaimed the dignity of an elder brother, Shangguan Qing puffed up with pride and declared, “Stick with me from now on! Don’t just bury your head in books! What good is it being a scholar? In this campaign against the State of Jin, I killed plenty of top experts! Ever heard of Xie Hangzhou? Gongsun Yu’s number one fighter? Your brother here shot him dead! And those little bastards from the Sword Lodge? Your brother killed them too!”
“Elder brother, you’re incredible.” Xiao Heng said with eyes full of admiration.
He really is my father’s biological son. he even talks exactly the same way, not a single word out of place.
Xiao Heng suppressed a laugh, but his eyes were brimming with a mix of shock and admiration toward his older brother.
He was the very picture of a little brother, through and through.
This thoroughly pleased Shangguan Qing!
He slung the firelance back over his shoulder with a practiced motion, then turned to Xiao Heng and said, “You just got here and probably haven’t had breakfast yet, right? Come on! I’ll take you to eat something delicious!”
After saying a quick word to Gu Jiao, Xiao Heng got into the military carriage with Shangguan Qing and rode out of the camp.
Shangguan Qing did have other younger brothers back in the State of Yan, for example, Ming Junwang.
But Ming Junwang was especially detestable. He always acted one way to his face and another behind his back, constantly accusing Shangguan Qing of bullying him, which had completely worn away any good feelings he once had toward his siblings.
There were also a few other brothers, but none of them were particularly close to him.
Shangguan Qing kept staring at Xiao Heng without blinking.
Xiao Heng was very quiet, and there wasn’t even the faintest trace of disdain or discomfort toward him in his demeanor.
All those other brothers had been afraid of him.
They called him a sickly ghost and claimed that just playing with him would make them sick too.
Shangguan Qing crossed his arms and said defensively, “Hey, you do know that hanging out with me… might get you killed, right?”
“Who says so?” Xiao Heng asked.
Shangguan Qing raised an eyebrow and said, “That’s just what everyone says.”
“Are they top scholars?” Xiao Heng asked.
“Uh… no.” Not even close. None of them had even passed the provincial exams.
“I am.” Xiao Heng looked directly at Shangguan Qing with firm resolve and said with utmost certainty, “I’m the top scholar. I’m smarter than all of them. Only smart people are worthy of being your playmates. They’re not worthy.”
Shangguan Qing’s face suddenly turned a little red.
Ah, was this younger brother really a fool or just pretending?
That was such a childish thing to say!
But… why did it sound so good?!
…No! He had already planned to mess with him!
That was the code of the martial world!
He couldn’t go soft now!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
