“Xiao Ji?”

Chu Feipeng clenched his fists, his brows drawing together slightly as he looked up from afar at Marquis Xuanping, who stood high atop the war chariot in a commanding pose.

The State of Zhao was merely a lower state, unworthy of being taken seriously by the major powers, yet this name, Chu Feipeng had indeed heard of it before.

This was the man who had once made it onto the six state’s beauty list, even pushing their own princess from the State of Liang off the rankings. Though Chu Feipeng, as a grown man, normally had no interest in such frivolous matters, his younger sister was an imperial consort and brought it up every time she returned from the palace.

Moreover, rumors had it that this man had a terrible reputation. He was arrogant, unruly, and utterly shameless. Everyone who had fought against him in battle seemed to find him an unbearable opponent.

Piecing together everything he had heard, Chu Feipeng formed an initial impression of Marquis Xuanping in his mind: an embroidered pillow, beautiful on the outside but lacking substance; cunning and full of tricks.

With that thought flashing through his mind, Chu Feipeng actually found himself less apprehensive about this Marquis Xuanping who had arrived so dramatically on a war chariot.

Still, he found it strange. Wasn’t the State of Zhao’s army supposed to be attacking the Yan navy at Chishui Pass? Why had Marquis Xuanping shown up here at Yanmen Pass instead?

And that war chariot beneath his feet, it looked a little familiar too.

Marquis Xuanping:

Yep, swiped it straight from the Liang camp stationed in the valley!

Chu Feipeng temporarily set aside the questions swirling in his heart, casting a calm gaze toward Marquis Xuanping as he said, “It seems you recognize this general.”

Chu Feipeng could speak the language of the State of Zhao.

Marquis Xuanping curled his lips into a smile. “If you’re going to war, you had best first figure out which chicken you’re about to slaughter, and which dog you’re about to butcher.”

Chu Feipeng’s expression darkened. “Marquis Xuanping, you’re being insolent!”

He was merely a marquis from a lower state, yet he dared to show such blatant disrespect to him, a grand general from an upper state!

Marquis Xuanping looked down at him from his lofty perch, pointed his long blade directly at him, and sneered arrogantly, “And who the hell are you to decide whether I’m insolent or not?”

Chu Feipeng’s status as a noble of a superior nation had just been challenged in the most humiliating of ways.

Truth be told, relations between the State of Liang and the State of Zhao hadn’t been that bad in recent years. Among the three great upper nations, each had its own vassal states: the State of Zhao paid tribute to the State of Liang, the State of Qing to the State of Yan, and the State of Chen to the State of Jin.

Just last year, State of Liang’s Yu Qinwang had even visited the State of Zhao on a diplomatic mission, and as far as Chu Feipeng recalled, the negotiations had gone quite well, so much so that Yu Qinwang had spoken quite highly of the State of Zhao upon returning to the capital.

Thinking of this, Chu Feipeng forcibly reined in the fury boiling in his chest. “Marquis Xuanping, perhaps you’re mistaken. The ones you’re meant to attack are the Black Wind Cavalry of Great Yan, not the main forces of the State of Liang.”

Marquis Xuanping gave a lazy grin. “I’m not mistaken. The one I came to fight is you, you damn turtle bastard!”

“You—!” Chu Feipeng was instantly ablaze with fury!

He wasn’t someone easily angered. On the contrary, he was known for being calm and composed. Yet Marquis Xuanping had a special talent for driving people to the brink. Even Buddha would manifest from one’s chest and ascend to heaven in sheer rage.

At that very moment, a young man in black clothing leapt onto the war chariot, carrying with him the unconscious commander of the Black Wind Cavalry.

Suddenly, a line that Marquis Xuanping had just spoken flashed through Chu Feipeng’s mind——his son.

Chu Feipeng said coldly, “Marquis Xuanping, take off his helmet and see clearly! He’s the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry of Great Yan, not your son!”

If this entire conflict had been sparked by a case of mistaken identity, then it could still be avoided.

Marquis Xuanping began poking at Gu Jiao’s helmet visor, tapping it again and again, until Gu Jiao rolled her eyes at him in exasperation.

“Awake, are you?” He said with a teasing smile.

Chang Jing had already retrieved the protective talisman she had thrown away and placed it back on Gu Jiao. The violent aura within her gradually calmed, though her body, having been thoroughly overdrawn, had slipped into extreme weakness.

Marquis Xuanping toyed with her helmet like he was playing with a baby, lifting and nudging it around. Gu Jiao’s face turned completely dark, and she clearly didn’t want to say a single word.

This was definitely not how strangers interacted with each other.

A deep sense of foreboding began to rise in Chu Feipeng’s heart. “Don’t tell me you two are——”

Marquis Xuanping finally withdrew his annoyingly playful hand, looked over at Chu Feipeng, and pointed at Gu Jiao. “What’s his name?”

Chu Feipeng replied, “Xiao Liulang.”

Marquis Xuanping’s lips curled. “And what’s my name again?”

Xiao Ji!

Xiao Liulang. Xiao Ji.

That was it. He remembered now. It had been said that this young commander came from the State of Zhao.

So it was true. He and Marquis Xuanping were actually father and son?!

“Hey! Have you had enough of looking cool up there? Can we stop pushing now? Do you even know how heavy this war chariot is?!”

A robust male voice suddenly rang out from behind the chariot.

Chu Feipeng narrowed his eyes slightly. There was someone else?

Gu Jiao's eyes swiveled over and gave Marquis Xuanping a sideways glance, as if to say:

So your grand, impressive entrance was all thanks to that?

Marquis Xuanping gave a light cough. “Alright, that’s far enough. You can stop pushing.”

Tang Yueshan flicked away the sweat from his forehead, activated his qinggong, and with the Tang Family bow slung on his arm, he leapt gracefully onto the chariot to land beside Marquis Xuanping.

He glanced at Gu Jiao, who was being supported by Chang Jing. “Huh? That looks like a serious injury.”

Gu Jiao raised a finger and lazily greeted him.

Hello there, little henchmen, my lil’ bro.

When Chu Feipeng saw the large bow in Tang Yueshan’s hand, he immediately realized that the arrow which had pierced through his sleeve earlier had come from this man.

Such a precise and powerful shot!

The bow in Tang Yueshan’s hand was a three-stone bow; typical archers only used one-stone bows, and even the strongest ones in the army would rarely manage a two-stone bow.

So what kind of monstrous strength did this man possess, to be able to draw a three-stone bow with ease?

Tang Yueshan hadn’t noticed the way Chu Feipeng was eyeing him. Instead, he turned and shouted toward the back of the chariot, “Hey, you with the surname Gu! What are you still doing down there? Hiding behind the chariot forever? Or are you planning to push it all by yourself?”

Old Marquis shot Tang Yueshan a cold glare, then launched himself onto the chariot with his own burst of qinggong.

Gu Jiao’s eyes instantly widened.

Her visor was down at this moment, revealing only a pair of eyes that had regained their usual calm.

She blinked a few times, and summoning some mysterious reserve of strength, she pulled a small notebook and a charcoal pencil from inside her armor and scribbled, with some difficulty, “Brother, long time no see.”

The moment she finished writing, the action seemed to drain the last bit of energy from her body. Her head lolled to the side, her hands went limp, and she completely blacked out.

Old Marquis, who had just swallowed a full breath and nearly choked on it: “...!!”

Tang Yueshan reached out and checked Gu Jiao’s breathing. She was still alive. He turned to Chu Feipeng and asked, “So this guy’s the one who injured our little… Liulang? Not bad, he’s got some skills. So, which one of us is going up?”

Old Marquis had been watching the fight from afar. He could tell this general from the State of Liang had exceptional martial skill. They couldn’t afford to underestimate him.

“All of us, together!” Old Marquis said solemnly.

But just as he spoke, Song Kai arrived with a group of elite warriors.

“Looks like we won’t be going in together after all.” Tang Yueshan said as he rolled his neck and drew his large bow. “These guys are mine.”

He had claimed the high ground, which made it the perfect spot for eliminating enemy experts from afar.

“Chang Jing.” Marquis Xuanping gave the black-clad youth a meaningful glance.

Chang Jing walked up to Old Marquis, and without a word, he shoved the unconscious Gu Jiao into his arms.

Old Marquis's body stiffened as if he had been electrocuted. “What are you doing?!”

“I’m going to kill someone.” Chang Jing’s face was blank as he finished speaking, then he unsheathed the long sword from his back and lunged straight at Chu Feipeng!

Old Marquis stared at the girl now lying limply in his arms, his whole body rigid with discomfort.

He held his arms out stiffly, as though wishing he could toss her as far away as possible.

“Marquis Xuanping!”

“What?”

Take this girl off my hands!

He didn’t want to bother with this damn brat!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

—

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

—

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
